Hazel Dewey of Boerne, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2009, in Methodist Hospital, San Antonio after a short battle with leukemia.

Hazel was born in Bishop, Calif., where her father, Roscoe Edyvean of Michigan, was a mining engineer in the gold fields and her mother, Hazel Gough of Kansas, a schoolteacher.

Hazel, known to many in her community as "Grandma," moved to Boerne in 1984 after 25 years of teaching Spanish, English and ESL at Stroman High School in Victoria. In Boerne she joined husband William "Bill" (they married in1942) who had moved here two years earlier to build his earth-berm passive solar house. Once in Boerne, Hazel taught ESL in the evening program for adults for more than 10 years.

Hazel is survived by daughter Margaret "Meg" Brown of Vancouver, BC; son Philip Dewey and wife Judy of Boerne; and daughter Susan Vasquez and husband Jesse of Austin. She is also survived by her four granddaughters (her "pride and joy"): Carla Dewey Hartman and husband Dave of Boerne, Jenny Dewey Jeffress and husband Michael of Fairfax, Va., Natalie Vasquez Smith and husband Doug of Alexandria, Va., and Sarah Vasquez Ripple and husband Jared of Austin. Grandma thoroughly enjoyed her three great-grandsons Julien Hartman and William and Lincoln Jeffress. Hazel is also survived by her dearly loved surrogate son Kelly Chaplin, long-time family friend Agapito Paredes and her beloved dog Toast, all of Boerne. Hazel was predeceased by her husband William "Bill" in 1994 and son-in-law Tom Brown in 2002.

Hazel grew up in mining towns in California, Arizona, Mexico, Colorado and Florida. She graduated from high school in Florida, attended Florida State University, the College of William and Mary, and earned her teaching credentials at Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kan. Shortly afterward she met Bill who was then in the Army-Air Corps and later the US Army. Their teaching and military careers also took them to California, Kansas, New Jersey, Germany and Oklahoma. In 1960 Bill and Hazel moved to Edna, where Hazel taught Spanish at Edna High School before moving to Victoria where she retired at age 65 from a 40-year teaching career.

Cherished by her family and friends for her intellectual curiosity and quick wit, Grandma could always be counted on for her worldly insight and sage advice. Those who knew her will remember and appreciate her love for animals, the San Antonio Spurs and all-things Harry Potter.

The family wishes to thank Cynthia McKenna for her spiritual mentoring, Dr. John Reineck, Drs. Jim McCoy and Steven Kalter of Boerne for their thoughtful and excellent medical care, and the nurses and staff of Methodist Hospital, 8th Floor Oncology Cancer Services and Methodist' Clinical Admitting Outpatient Services for their cheerful help and support.

A gathering of family and friends to remember Grandma will be held at PoPo Restaurant in Welfare on Monday, July 6, at 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers Grandma would appreciate donations to the Cibolo Nature Center or the Hill Country Animal League.

" No one could describe Hazel better than a woman known for her "wordly insight and sage advice". The love for her family, and pet Toast were ever apparent.

I will miss her, but at the same time learned a great deal from her humor, wisdom, and advice. She is permanently placed in my memory book of favorites. "
