Letters To The Editor

Civility starts with man in the mirror

Editor,

Art Humphries used his column titled “Civility: Where’d it go?” to name-call Democrats and make general accusations of fraud and gaslighting — not exactly a great way to demonstrate civility.

He gives several faulty and refutable examples of “lies” told by Democrats:

• 1. As Kamala Harris said, then-candidate Trump did campaign in 2016 to repeal and replace the ACA with a “wonderful plan” that he apparently never had. (Would this be a lie told by Trump about a non-existent plan?)

• 2. A poor understanding of math led Mr. Humphries to erroneously compare two dissimilar statistics, when he disagreed with a comment of Tim Walz. Both statistics could be correct rather than one correct and one wrong.

• 3. Contrary to Mr. Humphries’ comment, the ACA did make health care more affordable for millions of previously uninsured people who couldn’t afford adequate health care prior to the ACA.

Clearly, if you’re interested in civil conversation, you don’t begin with accusations and name-calling, and particularly not about behavior that can easily be seen in your own camp. That will become the focus of attention, distracting from the real issues.

It’s a way to avoid explaining what’s going on in the administration: indiscriminate dismantling of government agencies and defunding valuable research; illegal deportations; threats of sending American citizens to foreign jails; denying constitutional habeas corpus; refusing to follow court orders; budget proposals that take away services to the economically challenged in order to give tax cuts to the already well off; ignoring constitutional prohibitions to accept a jet from a foreign country, and, by the way, who will pay for the very expensive refitting, etc.

Yes, Mr. Humphries, let’s have conversation about public policy and let’s be civil, starting with the man in the mirror.
