The Boerne chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) awarded college scholarships to two Kendall County students who authored essays on lesser- known Founding Fathers of this nation, passing the gavel to a new chapter president at the same meeting.
In his winning essay, Hunter Bradshaw, a Comfort High School Class of 2025 graduate, highlighted the American Revolutionary role of Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, delegate to the Continental Congress, satirical writer, artist, judge and, purportedly, the real designer of the American flag.
Hopkinson helped to define America’s independent cultural identity, separate from England.
For his efforts, Bradshaw is the first-place winner of the SAR’s Patrick Patterson Memorial Scholarship of $3,000. The second place winner of a $1,500 scholarship is Diego Perez, a Boerne High School Class of 2025 graduate.
In his essay, Perez outlined the legacy of Samuel Adams, also a signer of the Declaration of Independence and, perhaps more importantly, a founder of the Sons of Liberty who carried out the Boston Tea Party of 1773.
Both scholarship winners will be attending the University of Texas at San Antonio this fall.
Glenn and Linda Bradshaw, grandparents of Hunter Bradshaw, and Steve and Kathleen Perez, parents of Diego Perez, attended the awards presentation.
In addition to awarding college scholarships at the May 24 meeting, SAR hosted guest speaker Anna Becker, Boerne resident and longtime volunteer with the Best Defense Foundation (BDF).
BDF celebrates U.S. military veterans by implementing Battlefield Return Programs (battlefield sites), videotaping interviews with U.S. veterans in order to preserve the history of their military experiences and assisting veterans in their return to civilian life.
Becker showed several moving videos of World War II veterans returning to the European battlefields on which this “Greatest Generation” fought. She also noted that several Kendall County WWII veterans have already participated in BDF’s battlefield returns.
The growing Boerne Chapter of SAR then inducted several new members into the organization followed by outgoing Acting President Pat Blackman turning over the gavel to incoming SAR Chapter President Raymond Reeves.
