CELEBRATING THE ARTS
G ART FOTOSeptiembre-SAFOTO is a long-standing, independent and free festival and website platform dedicated to photographic arts.
Founded in 1995 by Michael Mehl, a photographer, video artist and composer, the festival takes place every September, showcasing a diverse range of photographic expressions through exhibits in San Antonio, Austin, the Texas Hill Country and online.
Conversations began three decades ago between Mehl and Patricia Mendoza, director and founder of the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City, discussing the creation of a photography festival. Initially called PHOTOSintesis, the festival was launched in San Antonio, originating from collaborations with Mendoza and the Texas Photographic Society.
Within just a few short years, FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA became a full-fledged international event, expanding to include exhibitions in other cities: Houston, Austin, Boston and New York.
Within five years, the festival doubled in size and featured work from more than 180 photographic artists in 50 exhibitions across multiple venues and cities. In 2002 the event continued to grow with exhibitions showcasing the work of artists from various countries in numerous venues across Texas and other states.
By the following year, there were too many participants to count the exact numbers of participants and locations.
Today, FOTOSEPTIEMBRE- SAFOTO continues to focus on diversity. The festival embraces a wide array of photographic styles, themes and artists without a specific overall theme. The festival remains committed to providing an inclusive platform for artists, supporting the creation and appreciation of photographic art for a broad audience.
Another reason to celebrate the festival is its complete independence and self-funding, sustained by the dedication of the founders and team.
Additionally, there has always been an emphasis on accessibility. Participation is free and open to everyone, creating a welcoming space for both established and emerging artists. And fostering connections between photographers, artists, curators and the public adds to the creation of a photographic community.
