GUEST COMMENTARY
COMFORT — MixHaus Gallery announces its upcoming exhibition, “The Return: A West Texas Retrospective,” featuring a new body of work by San Antonio-based artist Douglas Galloway. The exhibition runs Sept. 5 through Oct. 26 with an opening reception Sept. 6, from 2–6 p.m. The public is warmly invited to attend and meet the artist.
Born of the red West Texas earth and the moss-draped bayous of the South, Galloway’s abstract encaustic and mixed-media paintings reflect both rugged landscapes and deeply personal ties to place. His series, The Return, revisits the stark beauty of West Texas through the lens of memory, resilience and homecoming.
Galloway will be the featured artist in attendance during the Comfort Art Festival on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition, MixHaus Gallery will host an artist talk on Oct. 18, from 2–4 p.m., where Galloway will share insights into his creative journey and the inspirations behind The Return.
“The Return is not just about the land. It’s about the family and stories that root us there, and the way those ties call us home no matter how far we go.” – Douglas Galloway.
“The Return is a homecoming. Through painting, I’m retracing the landscapes of my childhood — places of resilience and beauty that continue to shape who I am. Each work is both a memory and a meditation on what it means to belong.” – Douglas Galloway.
“Douglas’s work embodies what MixHaus Gallery is about: authentic expression rooted in personal story, yet expansive enough to resonate universally.” – Cara Hines, owner, MixHaus Gallery.
Douglas Galloway’s formative years in East Texas were steeped in Creole legends and mysticism and punctuated by road trips to his father’s family in Sweetwater, Texas. Always informed by place, his abstract mixed media encaustic works reflect the parched soil of the Rolling Plains, the Creole South, and the vibrant Latin cultures he’s lived among.
A decade of spiritual exploration deepened his perspective. Eventually, Galloway returned to San Antonio to pursue painting with renewed intent, honoring his father’s dying wish that he return to his art.
