Library exits summer, back to regular scheduling

Children’s programs have returned

Library staff took a breather during the month of August so that we could prepare for our fabulous fall programming for little ones.

We have two storytimes for babies up to age 2. These Bubbletime Bookworm programs take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. On Wednesday mornings, preschoolers aged 2 to 5 are invited to join us at 10:30 a.m. for Little Listeners.

On Tuesday afternoons, our PAWS 4 Reading allows youngsters the opportunity to read to a lovely doggy who happily listens to the stories and enjoys a scratch behind the ears. On Thursday afternoons at 3:30 p.m., grade-school gamers from 4th and 5th grades can show off their Nintendo Switch skills in our Game On! Program.

Adult Programming

Much of adult programming continued through the summer, but we have also added some new topics.

We currently are partnering with Larry Sunn to present a 14-week water-conservation program each Wednesday at noon. We started on Aug. 13, but you can still come to any or all of the sessions that have yet to happen.

All our monthly discussion groups continue. We host groups whose members love poetry, nonfiction, literary fiction, eclectic books and mysteries. You can find the schedules and topics for each of these discussions on our website.

Annual Boerne Book Fest Please join us on Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Patrick Heath Public Library for the annual Boerne Book Festival.

Featured programs this year include cookbook authors with Les Dames d’Escoffier, bestselling authors Bryan Burrough and Stephen Harrigan, children’s book author and artist Kazu Kibuishi, the popular Writers’ League of Texas panel discussion, a program about the Folklore Society of Texas, and a “Writing to Heal” panel discussion.

Our featured vendor tents on the back lawn of the library will include The Writers’ League of Texas, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, San Antonio Sci-Fi and Fantasy Writers, Sisters in Crime, South Texas Authors of Romance, UT Press, Texas Tech University Press, Trinity University Press and Texas A&M Press Consortium.

The Book Fairy will be on hand all day once again, and authors from SCBWI will read from their children’s books on the Amphitheater Stage.

Miss Constance will be on hand at 10 a.m. with cookies from Salty & Sweet. For details, explore our website: www.boernebookfest. com, and check out our FB and IG pages.

Live! at the Library

Our monthly concert series skipped August because of that wicked heat, but we are back this month. Newcomer Graham Pearson will take the amphitheater stage at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18. Join us as we sit out under the stars. Don’t forget to bring your picnic supper and something comfortable to sit on.

Goodbye and hello

On Aug. 22 we said farewell and good luck to Kiauna Dunbar. She got her dream job in San Antonio; she’s a full-time library student, and she’s working as an assistant to the dean at the North Carolina college she is attending. Even though we were sad to see her go, we know that many great things are in store for her.

Now for the hello. We have just hired Amari Russell as our newest part-time library associate. She starts Sept. 8. Amari has lots of library experience, and she is also incredibly pleasant and patient. Please be sure to make her feel welcome.

Best bookshop

The Bookshop Under the Windmill, Boerne’s favorite used bookstore, sits right next door to the library and is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Operated by the Friends of the Boerne Public Library, this volunteer-run shop welcomes donations of gently used books, movies, magazines, puzzles and more. Donations can be dropped off at the library during regular hours. Items not added to the collection are passed along to the bookshop. Every purchase you make helps fund library programs and services.
