BOERNE — Starting the school year with next year’s graduating seniors in mind, the Boerne Performing Arts board encourages generous donations to a scholarship fund to enable students to pursue careers in fine arts in memory of music educator and fine arts enthusiast Cathie Meadows.
In February of 2024, after 12 years of bringing topnotch concerts, musicians, dance troupes, acrobatics and the like to Boerne and Hill Country audiences, the Boerne Performing Arts (BPA) board of directors made the difficult decision to cease operations due to flagging financial support and economic pressures.
As the board prepared to disband, it established the Cathie Meadows Memorial Scholarship for the Fine Arts, through the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country.
Meadows was a founding board member and served as director of operations of Boerne Performing Arts for several years and as artistic director from 2021-2024. She was also a beloved music educator in Boerne ISD schools for 17 years. Meadows died from ALS disease on March 27, 2025.
The board established the scholarship with $25,000 start-up funds. Every year starting in 2026, one graduating Boerne ISD student enrolling in a college or university in a fine arts degree program will receive a scholarship of $1,500-$2,000, depending on available funding.
Community members are invited to contribute to this fund with the goal of offering this scholarship in perpetuity.
A core BPA commitment was to promote the education of fine arts through student outreach programs. Over 12 years, nearly 50,000 students attended For KIDS concerts or benefited from master classes with the visiting artists.
The scholarship will continue to encourage and enable young people to develop their skills and hone their talents in Meadows’ memory and her many years of promoting the arts, both in her role as an educator and as a major force in bringing performing arts to Boerne as part of BPA.
