Editor,
The Kendall County Democrat’s column, “Why Woke is Wonderful” was wonderfully timed, just four days after Charlie Kirk was assassinated. The Democrat should read some of the writings of Thomas Sowell.
Sowell is a 95-year-old Black man, one of the greatest minds this country has produced. He grew up poor in Harlem, served in the Marines and earned a Ph.D. in economics.
One of my favorite quotations from Sowell is, “Civil rights used to be about treating everyone the same. But today some people are so used to special treatment that equal treatment is considered to be discrimination.”
In his book “Intellectuals and Society,” Sowell quotes Joseph Epstein from his 1985 article, “True Virtue” — “Disagree with someone on the right and he is likely to think you obtuse, wrong, foolish, a dope. Disagree with someone on the left and he is more likely to think you selfish, a sell-out, insensitive, possibly evil.”
Now, 40 years later, the woke left refers to their enemies as Nazis, fascists, or “a threat to Democracy.” It’s no wonder that some of their followers turn to political violence. That is disgraceful, not wonderful.
The Kendall County Democrat goes on to try to reignite the flames of global warming hysteria. Apparently, he still doesn’t know that sea level has risen 400 feet since the last Ice Age, 18,000 years ago.
We are in an interglacial stage. During the last interglacial stage 125,000 years ago, sea level was 25 feet higher. That’s when the coral islands and atolls were formed. Coral only grows underwater. At that time, all humans were living in Africa and none of them were driving SUVs.
Trust the science.
