City offers first public EV charging stations

Boerne opened its first public electric vehicle charging station, marking a new step toward providing modern amenities for residents and visitors.

The charger, located in the Boerne Visitors Center parking lot at 282 N. Main St., features two ports that allow two vehicles to charge at the same time. With a capacity of 120 volts, the station is only the second of its kind between San Antonio and Kerrville and the only one in Boerne.

“This project was several years in the making due to supply chain delays, but we’re proud to deliver a system that benefits the widest range of EV customers,” said Sheldon Cravey, assistant IT director, who led the effort alongside Director of Operations Nick Montagno.

By comparison, a standard wall outlet provides one to three volts, while a dryer outlet typically has a capacity of seven volts. Project officials said most EVs will be able to sufficiently charge in about 30 minutes.

The charger is listed on the ChargeLab app for EV drivers to easily find and operates with a simple $0.35 cent per kilowatt hour fee. Drivers can pay via the app and the city is working to add a pay by credit card option.

“The station is designed for a broad range of users – tourists, locals, shoppers, and employees – especially at a time when Texas is third in the nation for drivers who own electric vehicles,” said City Councilman Ty Wolosin, a supporter of the project. “The station is an important new amenity for both residents and guests, encouraging them to explore downtown and visit local businesses.”

The project reflects Boerne’s mission of delivering high-quality services that strengthen the community while maintaining its unique Hill Country character and providing modern conveniences that meet the needs of residents and visitors alike.
