Faith, freedom, nation — respect

WRITE OF CENTER

Much has been written about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

I admired Charlie for his love of our nation and passion for engaging others in respectful dialogue.

Van Jones, a CNN political commentator, revealed text messages from Charlie the day before he died. The text was in the wake of a fairly contentious spat between the two over the murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska.

Charlie texted, “Hey Van, I mean it, I’d love to have you on my show to have a respectful conversation about crime and race. I would be a gentleman as I know you would be as well. We can disagree about the issues agreeably.”

Jones shared this on CNN, admitting that while he was shocked to receive the message, he also felt that after all the hate (from radical leftists) over Charlie’s murder it was important to share the truth about Charlie’s heart. I too was shocked, but about Van Jones’ kind thoughtfulness.

What a pleasant surprise from a liberal.

Most people would agree that there are crazies on both political extremes. I don’t include in this group those Democrats whom I personally know and believe to be fine people. We may disagree on issues, but I don’t question their integrity or love for our country.

However, I won’t extend this thought to those radical leftists who spew venom and hatred towards our nation and its founding. I refer to those radicals who have infiltrated the Democratic party and never have anything good to say about the USA.

Charlie’s memorial service included many Gospel references, some of which are challenging to adhere, including the call to love and pray for your enemies. This is tough stuff, but Jesus stated in Luke 9:23 “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

What Jesus was telling them is that they needed to put to death their own plans and desires and then turn their lives over to Him and do His will every day.

Jesus came to earth not as a political revolutionary, but a spiritual revolutionary. The Pharisees and Sadducees thought they could eliminate Jesus’ influence by crucifying Him. How wrong they were. From disciples in a small section of the world, Christ has billions of followers on all continents.

Yet there are those in America who claim to promote freedom of religion but really want a society that is free from any signs of religion. Their godless secularism does nothing to contribute to the spiritual wellbeing of our nation.

But a spiritual revival is exactly what America needs today. I’m not seeking a kumbaya moment, but a reality check of respect.

Radical leftists view our nation’s founders not as wisdom infused leaders, but rather as old, racist, white men. To these ingrates it’s OK to burn the American flag as opposed to flying it. If socialists and Marxists such as Ilhan Omar and AOC despise America so much, if they rejoice in the murder of a God-loving man such as Charlie Kirk, then I suggest they move to Cuba or Venezuela which would be more in line with their political philosophy.

It’s encouraging that 95 Congressional Democrats supported a resolution honoring the life of Charlie Kirk but why did 58 of them oppose and another 38 decline to vote. Are they fearful of offending the crazy radicals?

I’m grateful for the leadership of Kendall County GOP Chairwoman Jen Barreras Rawls for organizing a vigil to honor Charlie. Over 2,000 people attended the vigil including numerous student speakers from local schools. The passion and steadfastness of these students was impressive. They are our future.

After hearing such wisdom from young people, many older folks who I spoke with mentioned they felt both relieved and hopeful for our nation’s future.

Death cannot stop a movement whose time has come. The crucifixion of Jesus didn’t stop the spread of Christianity, nor did the murder of Martin Luther King stop the civil rights movement.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk will not stop the movement he started. Civil debate in a nation whose founding many believe was based on divine intervention is the cornerstone of our democracy.

Friends, we have work to do. Let’s get going ... respectfully.
