SAN ANTONIO – Boerne Champion closed out its regular-season water polo schedule last Saturday and began the playoffs this week with a couple of matches.
The Champion boys kicked postseason play Tuesday with a 15-1 win over Fox Tech. They faced Johnson Thursday at Alamo Heights and won that match, 21-7.
The Lady Chargers opened the playoffs with an 18-2 win over Highlands on Monday. They also defeated Alamo Heights Thursday, 13-6.
The Lady Chargers play New Braunfels Canyon Monday in the third round and the and the boys’ opponent is TBD.
Before that, the Champion boys beat Clark, 18-12, and also defeated the Greyhounds last Saturday, 23-3. The Chargers won this year’s district title with a 10-0 mark and are 22-8 after Thursday’s match.
The Champion girls had to put in some extra work to secure a district title and played a tiebreaker match with Clark for first place in the final league standings.
Champion had defeated Clark in the first round, but the Lady Cougars beat the Chargers on Saturday 9-3, to tie Champion atop the district standings at 9-1.
Since they had the same record and had beaten each other, they played the tiebreaker game later that day and Champion won, 10-4, to wrap up the league championship. The Lady Chargers also beat Boerne High that day, 14-8.
The Champion girls are 25-6-1 overall and finish district play at 10-1.
