THE BOOKWORM

“Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound… Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman!”

During the mean, hard days of The Great Depression, life was indeed bleak with little but a handful of coins to rub together and an aching wish for better times. With little food to be had, families often gathered round and found sustenance in sharing stories about happier times.

Of greatest appeal were the weekly radio stories that swept us away with heart-stopping, edge-of-yourseat adventures. We galloped away with the Lone Ranger, zoomed into outer space with Flash Gordon, and soared skyward with Superman.

Such transportive tales sparked imagination, enriched knowledge and rekindled hope.

Today the 21st century is not without its challenges. As did those children of long past, today’s children are looking for “a really great adventure.” The joys of getting lost in a riveting adventure are indeed timeless, and will forever provide comfort, hope and, of course, unbeatable entertainment.

Start your adventure today by checking out these books at our library.

“Hekyll And Snyde” by Michelle L. Brown

Lewis Hekyll concocts a secret formula to radically increase his height. He hopes his added inches will help his coach father not only to win the season’s games but also keep him from getting fired. But now Lew’s ego is too big, too. He is turning into a supersized monster.

“Jumanji,” by Chris Van Allsburg

Siblings Peters and Judy are bored. Searching for something new and interesting to do, they find a board game they have never played before — Jumanji. What a surprise awaits them, for when they start to play Jumanji the game comes to life.

“Minecraft Castle Redstone,” by Sarwat Chadda

Fans of the Minecraft computer game will dig into this novel. Cowardly Rajah dreams of being the most famous adventurer in history. But his father had already done it all, triumphing over Ender Dragon and even charting the Overworld.

But then Rajah, his servant and squire find an ancient map to the legendary Castle Redstone — a place his father has never been. Will Rajah be able to conquer his fears and meet the challenges along the way to Castle Redstone?

“Ticket To Ride: An Unexpected Journey,” by Adrienne Kress

Based on the wildly popular board game of the same title, this novel will plunge you into a journey that tests your gaming strategy skills and the challenges of working together.

You will meet Teddy, a boy obsessed with trains. When he wins a trip on the Excelsior Express, he is absolutely thrilled to board the train. But thrills soon turn to chills as Teddy is plunged into a hair-raising adventure.

As dastardly deeds by villains multiply, Teddy begins to wonder who really is the villain. And will this journey ever end?
