Lady Chargers clinch playoff spot

Cooksey tallies 71 assists in five-set match with Mules

Even though the Alamo Heights volleyball team has played Boerne Champion tough this year and taken them to five games in two district matches, the Chargers have managed to defeat the Mules both times.

Alamo Heights visited Champion last Friday and the Lady Chargers completed the season sweep with a tough five-set win, 25-27, 25-14, 25-21, 31-33, 15-9.

Last Friday’s win also clinched a playoff spot for the Lady Chargers. They are 9-3 in district and 24-5 overall.

Champion visited Boerne High Tuesday and closes out the week at home against Pieper on Friday.

The Chargers join New Braunfels (12-0) and Pieper (10-2) as teams having locked up a postseason berth. Only one spot is left in 26-5A and it’s between Smithson Valley (8-4) and Alamo Heights (6-7) for fourth place.

The Rangers have four left to play in 26-5A, and the Mules have three left and lost to Smithson Valley both times this year, so they must finish ahead of the Rangers and not tie them in the standings.

A match that goes five sets usually results in big numbers and that was the case Friday as Cassidy Breuer finished with 28 kills, Finley Weikle added 21 kills, and Taylor Fenton came up with 17 kills.

Breuer and Aleah Ramirez both dropped in one ace each, Fenton registered 5 blocks and Weikle added 3 blocks, while Brady Cooksey tallied 71 assists.

Chargers coach Kelly McDaniel was checking into whether 71 assists is a school record.
