Boerne Champion has had some ups and downs this year, but the Chargers persevered and moved to within one win of clinching a playoff spot after they defeated Victoria East on Friday, 48-14.
It’s Champion’s first win at home in 2025 and they did it before a homecoming crowd of 5,579.
The Chargers improved to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in district. Champion hosts Wagner on Friday and a win should get them into the postseason party.
Coach Blane Ellis said he was proud of how his team played.
“It’s a tremendous win for us. This is what our community expects and we’re proud to come out and perform in front of them every chance we get,” he said. “It always feels good to get a win at home.”
The Chargers scored in all four quarters and were up 14-0 in the first quarter after Zachary Lopez ran in it from 27 yards and Owen Thornton hauled in a 46-yard TD pass from Ryder Flugence.
In the second quarter, Zachary Garcia finished off a scoring drive for the Chargers with a 6-yard sprint into the end zone. Brogan Dempsey then took it to the house on a 54-yard sweep and it was 28-0 late in the period as Champion rolled to 260 total yards of offense by halftime.
“We knew if we could get up a couple of scores on them, their temperament would completely change,” Ellis said. “We had a lot of success running the ball.”
Victoria East’s Breshawn Stafford put the Titans on the board with less than a minute until halftime to make it 28-7, but the Chargers added to their lead in the third stanza after Caleb Farias found pay dirt on a short run and it was 35-7.
Garcia tacked on his second score of the night early in the fourth after he jetted 57 yards into the end zone for the 42-7 lead.
Later in the fourth quarter, Flugence tossed his second TD pass, this one to Mason Clayton, on a short slant as Clayton became the sixth Charger to score in the game. The Chargers missed the extra point, but that was about the only thing they did wrong all night.
Victoria East fought to the end as QB Dedric Callis had the final score on the night with a 63-yard burst down the Charger sideline with 1:45 left. From there, the Chargers ran out the clock to secure the win.
