Eagles have chance at district championship
After a bye week and two games on the road before that, the Geneva School of Boerne football team is finally home as they close out the regular season this Friday.
The Eagles host Corpus Christi John Paul II for homecoming in Boerne, 7 p.m.
A few weeks ago, the rainstorm that hit the area took out a light pole at the football field that fell on some stands on the visitor’s side. The Eagles have installed temporary lighting and bleachers and hope to have everything ready for Friday’s homecoming game.
If the field isn’t ready, they may have to move the game or play Saturday afternoon.
The Centurions are struggling this year and are 1-8 overall and 0-4 in district, while Geneva is 7-2 overall and 3-1 in district.
Geneva coach Bob Rosenstiel said the Corpus Christi school plays with a lot of heart even though they haven’t won many games this year.
“They fight hard; they’re just limited in what they have,” he said. “This is their final game of the season and they want to win. They have seniors they’re playing for and we want to keep it respectful. We have to fight without playing down.”
Depending on how things go on Friday, Geneva could win a district championship. Three teams in the district at 3-1 heading into the last week of the regular season.
Geneva is in the playoffs, but they aren’t sure who they will play at this point since seeding in the district won’t be settled until Friday after all the teams play.
If the Eagles win the district championship, they will have a first-round bye. If not, they’ll play to start the playoffs next week.
Hill Country Christian and New Braunfels Christian are both 3-1 as well, while Holy Cross is 2-2. Those four teams will represent the district once the playoffs start.
Rosenstiel said they used the bye week to sharpen up and added that he gave the team some days off to heal some bumps and bruises.
“We had Monday and Tuesday off last week and then had abbreviated practices for the rest of the week,” he said. “Then we gave them the weekend off.”
