Champion boys hoops team splits first two games

The Boerne Champion boys basketball team split its first two games after they won their opener against Southwest Legacy last Friday and lost to Warren Monday at the Northside Sports Gym.

Champion starts the year at 1-1 and plays in the Harlandale tourney this weekend.

Vs. Southwest Legacy

Boerne Champion had a strong start to its season opener and defeated Southwest Legacy last Friday, 70-46.

Gavin Peck turned in a solid game and finished with 21 points, Reid Reddy added 15 points, Nicholas Plummer scored 13 and Travis Clark tallied 10 as four Chargers were in double figures.

William Kliesing added 7 points, while Ryan Gallardo and Nikolas Georgelos both chipped in with 2.

Plummer grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and Kliesing and Clark both snagged 6 boards, while Peck dished out 4 assists and Georgelos and Plummer recorded 3 assists each.

Vs. Warren

Gavin Peck led all scorers with 29 points, but the Warriors defeated the Chargers, 60-58.

The Chargers were trailing by as many as 11 in the second half but mounted a comeback. They cut it to six points with 3:03 left. From there, Champion whittled the lead to two points at 58-56 with 13.7 seconds.

A Warren player was fouled and went to the foul line where he made two free throws and bumped their lead to 60-56 with 7.2 ticks left on the clock. After the free throws, Gavin Peck pushed the ball down the court and launched a 3-pointer and was fouled with 2.5 seconds remaining.

Peck had 27 points at that point and made his first two free throws and it was 60-58, but he missed his third free throw on purpose in hopes the Chargers could grab the rebound and either tie it or win it at the buzzer, but the Warriors rebounded and ran out the clock to secure the victory.
