Mary Ellen Schulle made the announcement at last week’s Kendall County Commissioners Court meeting, showing a plaque sent to her office as a result.
“This award is for a county that has shown excellence in the field of floodplain management,” Schulle said. “The county has demonstrated achievements in reducing flood losses and preventing loss of life through administration of its floodplain management program.”
The TFMA noted that the county has gone beyond typical programming and encourages citizen interest and action to minimize the impact of flooding.
The Texas Floodplain Management Association hosted its annual Floodplain Awareness Week May 19-23 — six weeks before the deadly Guadalupe River flooding on July 4 that killed 137 and topped $1 billion in damage to property and structures.
The TFMA noted Kendall County has adopted higher standards in floodplain management, to protect county budgets and the public.
The county has been engaged in leveraging available resources, like base-level engineering data, and looking into what other avenues they can use to apply for additional funding, tio update flood risk and plan for mitigation measures.
