SAN ANTONIO – Despite a 29-point effort from Gavin Peck, the Boerne Champion boys basketball team fell to Warren Monday at Northside Sports Gym, 60-58.

Champion is 1-1 and entered in the Harlandale Tournament that started Thursday.

Warren had a fast start and dropped in 21 points in the first quarter for the 21-16 lead.

The Warriors outscored the Chargers in the second, 14-11, and took a 35-27 lead into halftime.

Champion won the third quarter 13-12, and it was a 47-40 lead for the Warriors going into the final stanza.

Warren heated up in the fourth quarter and was up by as many as 11 points, but the Chargers mounted a comeback.

They cut it to six points with 3:03 left and from there, Champion whittled the lead to two points at 58-56 with 13.7 seconds.

A Warren player was fouled and went to the foul line where he made two free throws and bumped their lead to 60-56 with 7.2 ticks left on the clock.

After the free throws, Gavin Peck pushed the ball down the court and launched a 3-pointer and was fouled with 2.5 seconds remaining.

Peck had 27 points at that point and made his first two free throws and it was 60-58, but he missed his third free throw on purpose in hopes the Chargers could grab the rebound and either tie it or win it with a bucket at the buzzer, but the Warriors rebounded and ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Besides Peck’s 29 points, Nikolas Georgelos tallied 15, William Kliesing netted 6, Noa Basco had 5 and Reid Reddy scored 3 as only five Chargers scored in the game.
