Despite some rough free- throwing shooting down the stretch, the Boerne High girls basketball team held off Warren Tuesday night at Greyhound Gym, 56-49, for their third win in a row.
The Lady Greyhounds BHS (3-1) played in the SAISD tourney this weekend and opened Thursday against Incarnate Word.
BHS shot eight free throws in the final 1:19 of Tuesday’s game and only made two of them, but Warren had its own struggles.
Greyhounds coach Amy Ruede said free-throw shooting is something they’re working on and recently made each player shoot 200 free throws.
While Boerne went 14 for 31 for 45 percent from the line on Tuesday, they made up the points in other ways and played strong defense.
Tuesday’s contest was tied 13-13 at the end of first quarter, but Boerne outscored the Warriors in the second quarter, 20-15, for the five-point lead at the break, 33-28.
At a certain point in the third quarter, Warrior went on a 9-2 run, and the lead was down to a single point at 40-39 with 3:07 left in the quarter.
BHS closed out the third by outscoring the Warriors 4-2, and the lead was up to three at 44-41 going into the final stanza.
Warren again trimmed the lead to one point by scoring the first bucket of the fourth to make it 44-43, but Boerne answered with a 10-0 run to open up a 54-43 advantage, it’s largest lead of the game at 11-points.
During Boerne’s 10-0 spurt, Addison Palluch scored 3 points, JT Hernandez added 2 points, Addison Saur hit a 3-point play and Melia Gonzalez nailed a 2-point bucket.
Boerne went 4 for 5 at the line to start the quarter but finished the period 2 for 8, however they were able to ride the 11-point lead to the finish and won by seven.
Addison Palluch led the Greyhounds with 18 points, Sutherlin Menn added 14, Addison Saur scored 6, Oleyvia Ramos netted 5, while Melia Gonzalez, JT Hernandez and Emery Reyes all tallied 4 and Hartlee Menn made a free throw.
