Chargers play at Harlandale tourney, also defeat Churchill and Somerset

Boerne Champion was entered in the Harlandale Tournament last weekend and then played a couple of games this week before taking off for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Chargers visited Somerset on Monday and then hosted Churchill Tuesday in a battle of Charger teams and won both.

At the Harlandale tourney, Champion placed fourth and then defeated Somerset and Churchill.

The Chargers ( 5- 3 overall) are off until next weekend when they play at the Border Olympics tournament in Laredo.

Vs. Churchill

Champion clubbed Churchill, 61-53, Tuesday at Charger Gym.

Champion was up 15-7 at the end of one and then turned in its best quarter of the afternoon by netting 22 points in the second for the 37-25 halftime lead after Churchill tallied 18 in the second.

The Chargers from Churchill made a slight comeback in the third quarter and outscored the Chargers from Champion, 21-14, and the lead was down to five points at 51-46 entering the final stanza.

Champion mostly played keep away in the fourth quarter and stalled, forcing Churchill to foul. The Chargers only went 2 for 7 at the line in the final period, but they still outscored Churchill in the fourth quarter, 10-7, for the win.

Champion went 5 for 13 in foul shooting for the game for 38 percent.

Travis Clark led Champion with 19 points, Reid Reddy added 14, Gavin Peck netted 9, Will Kliesing scored 8, Nick Plummer tallied 6 and Nik Georgelos chipped in with 5 points.

Vs. Somerset

Champion took a bite out of the Bulldogs, 66-39, as the Chargers drained 15 3-pointers in the game.

Gavin Peck and Ryan Gallardo both netted 15 points and each hit three 3s, Reid Reddy and Noa Basco scored 9 points apiece after both drained three 3s, Nik Georgelos tallied 8 and had two 3s, Nick Plummer and Travis Clark both chipped in with 5, with Clark hitting a 3-pointer.

Harlandale Tournament

Champion defeated LEE, 69-48, and also knocked off Georgetown East View, 55-52, to win its first two games at the tourney.

That put the Chargers in the semifinals where Central Catholic defeated them, 64-49, to put Champion in the third-place game.

East Central defeated the Chargers for third place, 73-61, to give Champion fourth place at the event.
