Aug. 5, 1930 Nov. 25, 2025

On Nov. 25, 2025, the Lord called Carlos Jones home, after a brief hospital stay. J. Carlos Jones was born Aug. 5, 1930, in Amarillo, Texas to Parents Carlos B and Viola Loraine Hanson Jones.

Carlos grew up in Amarillo, graduating from Amarillo High School in 1948. While in high school, Carlos began his career in architecture thanks to Architect W. R. Kaufman, for whom Carlos worked after school.

He then attended Amarillo College, earning an Associate Science Degree. In 1950 he enrolled in the College of Architecture at Texas Technological College from which he graduated in 1954. While in college, he was blessed with after school employment by firms OR Walker, Architect and Atchison & Atkinson, Architects.

Carlos and Sybil met in Lake City, Colorado in 1946 and were married on June 3, 1952.

Carlos served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 at Fort Bliss Army Base in El Paso, Texas and Eilsen Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. Carlos was trained as a radar mechanic on an M33 Antiaircraft Fire Control System and later served in that capacity on a 120 mm antiaircraft gun battery.

While stationed in Fairbanks, Carlos and Sybil were blessed with the birth of their son, Arthur, on Dec. 23, 1955. After being honorably discharged, they returned to Lubbock. Carlos joined the firm of McMurtry & Craig Architects. On March 6, 1957, they were again blessed with the birth of daughter, Kara.

Following his employment at Nesmith, Lane & Kuykendall, Architects of El Paso, Carlos joined the firm of Bartlett Cocke & Associates of San Antonio in 1962.

Following Mr. Cocke’s retirement, Carlos, along with partner John H Kell Jr. succeeded to ownership of the practice; becoming Jones & Kell, Architects and Planners. Much of Carlos’ earlier career involved commercial retail establishments, followed later by educational facilities; K through 12, colleges & universities and multistory office facilities. He was an Emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects, its San Antonio Chapter and the Texas Society of Architects.

After his long and successful career, Carlos retired at the end of 1995, giving him much more time to spend with his family and friends, while golfing, hunting and fishing.
