The Lady Chargers were on the road Tuesday to play a non-district basketball game at Buda Hays and before that, played in the Navarro Tournament last weekend.
In Tuesday’s district game, Hays had a strong finish and tallied 23 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lady Chargers, 71-35.
Champion is 8-8 overall and resumed district play by hosting Smithson Valley Friday night for Teacher Appreciation Night. They visit Alamo Heights on Tuesday.
The Hawks were up 14-9 at the end of one and then outscored the Lady Chargers in the second period, 15-12, for the 29-21 halftime lead.
Champion really struggled to score in the third quarter, and their only points came on a Sage Ramsey 3-pointer, and they were outscored in the stanza 19-3 to fall behind, 48-24.
The Lady Chargers played better in the fourth quarter and tallied 11, but Hays caught fire and knocked in 23 points after Faith Gray heated up and dropped in a dozen points to outscore Champion by herself in the period, 12-11.
Ramsey led the Chargers with 16 points and knocked down four 3s, Jenna Koepke was also in double figures with 11 points, Ray scored 4 points, Brielle Burdick made three free throws, and Jordyn Davis hit a free throw.
Navarro Tournament
The Chargers were entered in the Navarro Tournament last weekend and won their first three games but dropped their last two to finish fourth out of 16 teams with a 3-2 record.
Champion opened with a 60-35 win over Gonzales, edged Gloria Deo Academy by a point, 39-38 and then beat Jourdanton, 48-37.
Those three wins put Champion in the tourney semifinals where they lost to Antonian, 74-40. That loss to the Lady Apaches put the Lady Chargers in the third-place game where Saint Mary’s Hall won the contest, 52-41.
