Chargers open district play with setback to Alamo Heights

Tuesday’s district basketball opener between Boerne Champion and visiting Alamo Heights turned in the fourth quarter after the Chargers struggled to score, while the Mules heated up.

Champion was leading 45-41 when the fourth quarter started but was outscored in the final stanza, 23-13, as the Mules rallied to win the game, 64-58.

The Chargers start district at 0-1 and slip to 9-6 overall. Champion was at Boerne High Friday and then plays Pieper Tuesday, 1 p.m.

Champion only had five points through the first 6:45 of Tuesday’s fourth quarter and fell behind 57-50, after they were outscored 16-5. Gavin Peck nailed a 3-pointer for the Chargers with 1:15 left in the contest to make it a four-point game at 57-53, but that’s as close as they could get to catching the Mules.

Champion started to foul to stop the clock and Alamo Heights was up for the challenge by going 9 for 11 at the line in the fourth quarter.

After only scoring five points through the first 6:45, Champion closed it out with eight points in the final 1:15, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Mules.

Travis Clark hit four 3s and tallied 14 points for the Chargers, Peck added 13 points, Noa Basco and Nik Georgelos both scored 7, Will Kliesing netted 6, Ryan Gallardo had 5 points, Reid Reddy scored 3 and Gaege Hankins added 2 points.
