Lady Unicorns edge Lady Chargers in hoops

The Boerne Champion girls continued district basketball action last Friday with a home game against New Braunfels.

It was an evenly matched contest as both teams hit in double digits all four quarters to start the new year, but the Lady Unicorns had four players that combined for 52 of their 54 points on their way to a 54-48 victory.

Champion slips to 10-15 overall and 2-4 in district. They were at Wagner Tuesday and host Kerrville Tivy on Friday to close out the first round of district.

Riley Lundegreen tallied 18 points for New Braunfels, Ryder Wilson added 16, Sophia Wolf scored 10 and Michelle Moore netted 8.

It was a one-point game at halftime in favor of the Unicorns, 27-26, but the Chargers never scored more than 11 points in the third or fourth quarters, while New Braunfels recorded 13 and 14 points over the last two periods as they outscored Champion in three of the four stanzas.

Champion had two in double digits after Sage Ramsey and Jenna Koepke dropped in 12 points apiece. Kam Edwards battled foul trouble but still finished with 8 points, Lorena Barreiro and Brielle Burdick both hit for 5, while Jordyn Davis and Saoirse Ray chipped in with 3 points each.
