The Boerne Champion girls basketball team had a good start last Friday and were ahead at the end of the first quarter vs. Kerrville Tivy but the Lady Chargers couldn’t maintain the lead against the Antlers.
After being down at the end of the first quarter, Kerrville Tivy outscored the Lady Chargers over the last three periods and went on to win the game, 57-48.
Friday’s game closed out the first round of district and dropped the Chargers to 10-17 overall and 2-6 in district.
Champion began the second round of district Tuesday at home vs. Veterans Memorial, a team they beat in the first round. After that, the Chargers visit Smithson Valley Friday.
In last Friday’s game, Champion was leading the Lady Antlers at the end of the first quarter, 13-12, but really struggled in the second period.
The Lady Chargers basically went the first six minutes of the second stanza without a point as the shots just weren’t falling.
A pair of Brielle Burdick free throws with 2:09 left before halftime were their first points of the quarter for Champion and ended a 9-0 run by Kerrville Tivy.
Sage Ramsey later hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining before the break to account for all of Champion’s five points in the quarter.
While the Chargers struggled offensively, that wasn’t the case for the Lady Antlers. Tivy outscored Champion in the second 17-5 and took an 11-point lead into halftime, 29-18.
The teams basically traded baskets in the second half and Kerrville held onto the lead to win the game by nine points.
