The Boerne High girls began the second round of district basketball action Tuesday night at Greyhound Gym by hosting the No. 1 ranked 5A girls team in the state.
Wagner entered the 26-5A contest without a loss and kept its perfect record intact (35-0, 9-0) after the Lady Thunderbirds defeated the Boerne girls, 60-27.
Tuesday’s victory also gives Wagner the inside track to this year’s district title after they improved to 9-0 in 26-5A.
Boerne is 7-2 in district and would need the T-Birds to lose three times in the second round while BHS would have to run the table to win district since a tiebreaker goes to Wagner because they swept BHS this year.

The Lady Greyhounds are 19-7 overall. Boerne was at Kerrville Tivy Friday and hosts Veterans Memorial Tuesday.
BHS coach Amy Ruede said they need to look at Tuesday’s setback as a learning opportunity.
“We knew we were going to be playing the team that’s ranked No. 1 in the state, and we have to take the things we didn’t do well and do better at those things,” she said. “To compete with them is going to make us better.”
Wagner never trailed in Tuesday’s contest and was up 11-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Greyhounds struggled in the second stanza as well and only had two points through the first six minutes of the quarter to fall behind 25-6.
One thing the Wagner did well was control the boards, and the T-birds had too many offensive rebounds for Ruede’s liking.
“We have to do a better job of boxing out. Our girls in the paint were just turning and ball watching,” she said. “We’re going to have to get back in the gym and work on boxing out and make sure we control the boards. We didn’t get that done.”
Boerne only managed 5 points in the second quarter and went into halftime trailing 32-9.
The Lady Hounds played better in the second half, especially in the third quarter when they outscored the Thunderbirds, 11-8, but were still trailing 40-20 by the time it went into the final stanza.
Wagner closed it out by winning the fourth quarter, 20-7, to secure the victory.
No Greyhound made it into double digits after Oleyvia Ramos led the team with 6 points, Sutherlin Menn added 5 points, Addison Saur and Addison Palluch both scored 4, Emery Reyes netted 3, Hartlee Menn and Melia Gonzales both hit for 2 and Addison Neal made a free throw.
