There was only one goal tallied in the second half of Tuesday’s soccer match between the Boerne High and Boerne Champion boys’ teams, and it ended up being the game winner for the Greyhounds.
The Chargers were at Boerne ISD Stadium to take on Boerne High in their first-round district match, and the teams went into halftime knotted up at 2-2.
The lone second-half goal came on a set piece, a corner kick, that was knocked in by the Greyhounds, and that goal ended up being the difference in the match.
With the 3-2 victory, Boerne High improved 6-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in district, while the Chargers are 6-4 overall and 2-2 in district.
The Greyhounds were at Alamo Heights Friday and are off Tuesday. They’ll play again on Feb. 6 when they host Pieper.
The Chargers hosted Pieper Friday and will visit New Braunfels on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
The Greyhounds were up 2-1 late in the first half, but the Chargers tied it up at 2-2 and that’s how it went into the break.
The defenses tightened up in the second half until the Greyhounds broke through with the only goal of the half. Shae Gonzales took the corner that was headed in by Shane Garcia midway through the period and ended up being the game winner.
Champion had chances but couldn’t convert, and it stayed 3-2.
Will Hankins and Ethan Souza scored Champion’s two goals, while Jones Ferguson assisted on the Hankins goal.
Garcia tallied a goal, while JP Santa Maria and James Canavan also tallied single goals, and Gonzales and Canavan both came up with assists for BHS.
