THE BOOKWORM

February 2026 is Black History Month nationwide and at the Patrick Heath Public Library you will surely score big. We have a wide variety of activities and events for the whole family.

All month long, enjoy a fabulous collection of books on display from black authors to black stories, fiction and not fiction alike. Pick one up starting Monday, Feb. 2 and enjoy learning something new or escaping into a new world.

We will have books on display from all library collections; Youth, young adult and adult collections will be highlighted.

Interested in learning more about music, expanding your playlists or having fun and enlightening conversations? Join Sarah Habeeb, the library’s memory lab coordinator, on the first Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. for “Roots & Records,” a flagship program designed to expand music knowledge and explore music as memory.

The next program is set for 6 p.m. Feb. 4 in the library conference room. The group will be discussing jazz music, Herb Hall and the Chitlin’ Circuit. Please RSVP on the library calendar found on their webpage.

A new exhibition from the San Antonio African American Community Archives and Museum is coming to the library Feb. 11-21. “The Invisible Diamond” explores the revolutionary black baseball teams in San Antonio, Texas.

It will be on display in the library’s gallery space and is free to walk through and explore. On Saturday, Feb. 21 we will also have an exciting presentation by local historians and library friends, Dick Butler and Clifton Fifer, who will discuss Hill Country baseball history, including a focus on the black baseball team from this area as well.

Heath Library Van Life

While our outreach team technically does not live in the new Heath Library mobile library van, it sometimes feels like it.

We have spent the last couple of months preparing for mobile outreach programming, starting a whole new mobile library collection, and working on getting used to driving and caring for the van.

We are so excited to start our new programming with the senior centers in the area and had our first successful lobby stop at the Kronkosky Center this past week; a huge and special shoutout to Heath Outreach Coordinator Leah Mayo and follow staff member Caren Creech for working so hard to make the van super successful.

Keep an eye out for more Heath Library Van Life Chronicles and programming on the library’s website and calendar.
