COMFORT – Comfort High’s Jovani Zapata needed just six points Tuesday night against Ingram Moore to reach 1,000 for his high school career.
Zapata hit the mark in the first quarter on a 3-pointer and finished with 16 points in the game to help the Bobcats defeat the Warriors, 59-51.
CHS maintains its grip on second place in the district at 5-1, behind undefeated Blanco (6-0). The Bobcats are 20-9 overall and visited Llano on Friday.
Ingram played well early and led for most of the first half. Comfort knocked down a 3-pointer in the second quarter and held its first lead of the game at 29-26 before taking a 31-28 lead at halftime.
The Bobcats used a 9-2 run to start the third quarter and opened up a 40-30 lead, forcing Ingram to burn a timeout.
Comfort ended the stanza with a 48-35 advantage, but the Warriors made a game of it in the final stanza with an 8-1 spurt and cut it to six at 49-43 midway through the quarter.
Omar Rivera hit a 3 to make it 52-43 for Comfort’s first basket of the quarter. Rivera nailed another 3 with just under three minutes left, and the Bobcat lead swelled to 55-43.
Ingram made one last push and scored the next seven points, and it was 55-50 with 39.1 seconds on the clock.
Ingram started to foul and the Bobcats made four straight free throws to ice the game.
Besides Zapata’s 16 points, Mario Portugal added 13 and Jackson Dear scored 12 to make it three Cats in double figures.
Ricardo Angel was one point away with 9, Rivera scored all 7 of his points in the fourth quarter and Alex Padilla netted 2.
Vs. Blanco
Comfort couldn’t find its offense and lost to Blanco, 70-21, last Friday to end the first round.
