Despite an admirable rally by the Boerne Champion girls basketball team Tuesday at New Braunfels, the comeback attempt by the Lady Chargers came up short against the Lady Unicorns.
Champion outscored NB in the second, third and fourth quarters, but a fast start in the opening stanza by the Unicorns propelled them to a 65-58 victory.
The Lady Chargers slipped to 12-21 overall and 4-10 in district. They hosted No. 1 state-ranked and undefeated Wagner Friday in their final home game of the year. After that, they visit Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday to close out their season.
In Tuesday’s game, New Braunfels jumped out to a 21-5 lead by the end of the first quarter and that was the difference in the contest, because Champion outscored them over the final three stanzas.
The Chargers won the second quarter, 17-16, took the third period, 20-16, and then claimed the final stanza, 16-12.
At one point, Champion cut it to 2 points with just under a minute left in the game, but the Lady Unicorns held on for the win.
