Champion boys win sixth straight district game

Peck reaches 1,000 career points as Chargers top Wagner in overtime

The Boerne Champion boys have been playing some of their best basketball of the season in the last few weeks.

Champion has won six straight in district and hasn’t dropped in a game in the second round of 26-5A action.

A couple of those wins came in overtime, including last Friday’s victory over Wagner, 58-53. (The other was a double overtime win against Pieper.)

Not only did Champion help their playoff chances on Friday, but Gavin Peck reached the 1,000-point milestone of his high school career.

The Chargers are 22-9 overall and 9-4 in district. They are sitting in third place in 26-5A ahead of Alamo Heights (7-6), Kerrville Tivy (7-6) and Pieper (7-7).

Champion hosted Tivy on Tuesday and will be at home Friday against district-frontrunner Veterans Memorial. They’ll close out the regular season at Smithson Valley on Feb. 17.

Friday’s contest with the Thunderbirds went back and forth, and Wagner was up 17-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Champion outscored the T-Birds in the second, 15-9, and took a 28-26 lead into halftime.

Wagner retook the lead in the third quarter after they won the period, 14-11, and were up 40-39 heading into the final stanza.

The Chargers went up by 5 points in the fourth quarter but had a few turnovers and Wagner sliced into the lead. The T-Birds cut it to three points and then hit a 3-pointer with a few seconds left to tie it at 49-49 and send it to overtime.

However, the extra period belonged to the Chargers after they outscored Wagner, 9-4, and made their last six straight at the free-throw line to ice it.

Peck tallied 17 points to lead Champion, Reid Reddy added 16 and Travis Clark was the third Charger in double figures with 10 points.

Nik Georgelos and Kristopher Lauderdale both scored 4, William Kliesing had 3 and Ryan Gallardo and Nicholas Plummer finished with 2 points apiece.
