Grimes fans 19 Wagner batters and was one pitch away from perfect game

It was only Boerne High’s first baseball game of the season, but Greyhound pitcher Jackson Grimes looked to be in postseason form on Tuesday when BHS visited Wagner.

Grimes tossed a no-hitter and was one pitch away from a perfect game after he didn’t issue a walk or a hit in Tuesday’s contest. Grimes hit a batter in the first inning, and that ended up being the only blemish on his record as the Greyhounds went on to beat the Thunderbirds, 11-0.

Boerne starts the year at 1-0 and Tuesday’s win counts in the district standings. The Hounds play in the Northside tourney this weekend and hosts Kerrville Tivy on Tuesday.

Other than hitting that T-Bird player in the first frame, Grimes was otherwise perfect as he struck out 19 Wagner batters on 92 pitches.

The first out that wasn’t a Grimes strikeout came in the fifth on a ground out to third base. There was another ground out in the seventh and that was it as far as fielding; the rest of the T-Bird batters were sat down by Grimes. The outfielders were never involved in a play.

Offensively, the Greyhounds pushed in 3 runs in the third, added 3 in the fifth and scored one in the sixth to make it 7-0. Boerne plated 4 runs in the top of the seventh, so it went the distance and won’t go down as a mercy- rule game even though Boerne won, 11-0.

BHS finished with 11 hits, all singles. Jake Perez singled, scored and drove in 2 runs, Grimes helped his cause with a single and an RBI, Josh Kory singled, drove in a run and scored twice, Otis Skubal hit 2 singles scored 2 runs and picked up an RBI, Eli Srp singled, while Asher Wren hit 2 singles and Drake Kinneson and EJ Goolsby both singled. Goosby scored 3 runs and pushed in a run, and Wren also picked up an RBI.
