Boerne Champion didn’t drop a game at the Northside baseball tournament last weekend after they went 4-0-1 at the event.
Champion coach Ben Woodchick said his team had the best record at the round-robin tourney and was told they unofficially won it.
The Chargers improved to 5-0-1 overall and resumed district play Tuesday at home against Smithson Valley. They are in the Comal tourney this weekend.
Champion opened with a 2-1 win over Central Catholic on Thursday. They were trailing 1-0 and took the lead in the fifth with two runs and held on from there.
Later that day, the Chargers withstood a late charge from Pioneer. Champion was up 6-0 entering the fifth frame but gave up 6 runs in the inning and it was tied 6-all.
The Chargers answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the frame for the 8-6 lead, but Pioneer again tied it with 2 runs in the top of the sixth and it was 8-8. Champion still had last at bats in the bottom of the sixth and pulled away with 3 runs for the 11-8 win.
On Friday, the Chargers battled Sotomayor to a 1-1 tie. Soto scored their run in the top of the first and Champion scored theirs in the third and it went scoreless over the next five frames after they went 8 innings but ran out of time since tournament games are held to a time limit and can end in a tie.
Later on Friday, the Chargers edged Clark, 3-2, and scored all 3 of its runs in its last two at bats.
The Chargers returned on Saturday to defeat Warren, 7-4, and were down 4-3 before answering with 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth frame.
