Padilla hits game winner at buzzer to lift Bobcats past Sweetwater in playoff opener
Tuesday’s first-round playoff tilt between Comfort and Sweetwater had plenty of momentum swings, but it was Alexis Padilla’s shot at the buzzer that was the difference.
Padilla sank the game winner just ahead of the buzzer to give the Bobcats a 67-65 victory over the Mustangs Tuesday in San Saba.
Comfort (24-10) faced Holliday (28-4) in the second round Friday at Comanche. The Eagles won their district (11-1) and defeated Breckenridge on Monday, 53-49.
Sweetwater was leading 60-57 in the fourth quarter, but Comfort responded with a 7-0 run for the 64-60 lead. The Mustangs answered with a 5-1 spurt and tied it at 65-65 and had chances to take the lead but only went 3 for 6 at the free-throw line on its last three possessions of the game.
Comfort inbounded with 4.8 seconds left, and Omar Rivera dribbled the length of the court and drew the attention of several Mustang defenders near the 3-point line, but nobody stayed with Padilla under the basket.
Rivera dished it to a wide-open Padilla, who laid it in for the game winner and was mobbed by his teammates during the celebration as they replaced the dog pile with a (Bob) cat pile.
Padilla finished with 8 points, while Rivera had 6 assists and 12 points. Jared Valadez led the Bobcats with 22 points, Jackson Dear added 13, Jovani Zapata netted 7, Mario Portugal scored 3 and Ricardo Angel chipped in with 2.
Dear grabbed 9 rebounds, Zapata also dished out 6 assists to match Rivera and Valadez came up with 4 steals.
