After 25 years with Boerne ISD, Terry Gault is stepping away from the district and has taken a job with Northeast ISD.
Gault’s last day was Friday, and he said it’s been an emotional week.
“It’s bittersweet, but I’m excited about the opportunity,” he said. “I always planned that I would retire from Boerne ISD but (NEISD) is the only place that could have taken me away from Boerne.”
Gault was hired in 2001 to be the athletic trainer at Boerne High. He stayed there until Boerne Champion opened in the fall of 2008 and has been with the Chargers until now.
Along the way, Gault became Boerne ISD’s assistant athletic director under Stan Leech but at NEISD, Gault’s focus will be on administrative duties only and not include working as a trainer.
Gault said he is leaving with Leech’s blessing.
“He’s helped me grow, and he knows I’ve had career goals and allowed me to work on them,” Gault said. “We’ve had these conversations for a number of years, and I told him last summer that this was something I would be interested in, but it all just happened sooner than expected, and Stan has been super supportive.”
Gault said the biggest surprise in his announcement was the number of former students who have reached out to him to thank him.
“The outpouring of support has been overwhelming; my phone’s been blowing up. Everybody has been super kind and super supportive,” he said. “I have kids reach out to me that I haven’t heard from in 10 to 15 years, it’s been amazing.”
Gault said investing and working with the students is his best Boerne ISD memory.
“I’m proud of the kids that grew to be fantastic adults,” he said. “When former students reach out to you and tell you about their families and what they’re doing with their lives, that’s the most important thing for me.”
Gault’s three children graduated from Champion and his wife, Summer, is a principal at one of the schools in the district, so Boerne ISD means a lot to him and his family and always will.
“This district has given me so many gifts and I’m so grateful that I was here, and I think I’m leaving it a little bit better than when I came in,” he said. “I’m super grateful that the people trusted me with their children. I’ll miss the people the most, and maybe (Bumdoodlers) too.”
