The Boerne High softball team won a wild one over Boerne Champion Tuesday at Charger Field.
Tuesday’s contest contained 30 runs, 22 hits, 8 errors and went three hours before the Lady Greyhounds prevailed, 17-13.
BHS improved to 2-3 in district (8-3 overall) and Champion slips to 2-2 in district (7-4 overall). The Chargers were at Pieper on Friday and host New Braunfels Tuesday, while the Lady Greyhounds hosted Alamo Heights Friday and visit Pieper early next week.
Boerne High put Champion in a tough spot early after they scored 6 runs in the first two innings. The Lady Hounds added 2 more runs in the top of the fourth, and it was 8-0, on the verge of a run-rule victory, but the Chargers fought back and made a game of it.
Greyhounds coach Chester Pettibon said his team treated it like any other game and didn’t play with a lot of nerves.
“We told them to not build it up more than what it is. This is just another game, don’t make it bigger than that,” said Pettibon, whose team has never lost to the Chargers. “That’s all we did; we didn’t say anything else.”
BHS responded by scoring runs in six of seven frames, including 5 in the second and 6 in the sixth.
After falling behind 8-0, Chargers coach Sara Cammer said she knew her team would make a game of it and fight back.
“That’s the really special thing about this team; they don’t settle,” she said. “They are resilient and as coaches, that’s exactly what we want, a team that pulls together even when their backs are against the wall.”
At one point in the fifth, the Chargers cut the lead to three runs, 9-6, but every time Champion made a run, the Greyhounds responded.
The Chargers scored all 13 of its runs in the last four frames, but BHS tallied 8 runs in its last two at bats to never surrender the lead.
A bases-clearing double by Brooklynn Thomason in the top of the sixth led to a 6-run inning by Boerne and helped to offset a 2-run homer by Champion’s Mylie Parker in the bottom of the inning.
“We know that they have a good offense and we talked about what we needed to do, we needed to limit our mistakes when they were batting,” Pettibon said.
Cammer said she would like to see more consistency from her team and not fall behind 8-0 like they did on Tuesday, forcing them to try to furiously rally.
“I know there are times where we aren’t consistent, but that doesn’t define our grit and determination,” she said. “We just need to fine tune the little things that make the big things that much more special.”
For the Greyhounds, Thomason knocked out 2 doubles, took 3 walks, drove in 4 runs and scored 4 times, Maddie Vasquez doubled, picked up an RBI, walked twice and scored 3 runs, Kenley Thomason hit 2 singles, had an RBI and scored 3 runs, Lizzy Thornton and Bre Krause both pushed in 2 runs, Tessa Murphy walked twice, singled, collected 2 RBI and scored 2 runs.
Micah Bellamy went the distance in the circle and picked up the win on 154 pitches and struck out 5.
For the Chargers, Mylie Parker homered, doubled and hit 2 singles, collected 5 RBI and scored 3 runs, Emily Thomas doubled and drove in 2 runs, Reese Rogers doubled and hit 2 singles, pushed in 2 runs and scored twice, McKenzie Wilson knocked out 2 singles and scored 2 runs, Teagan Rogers hit 2 singles, Anna Hurst took 2 walks and Brylyn Thornburgh picked up 2 RBI.
Parker started in the circle, was replaced by Teagan Rogers in the second, and then Parker closed out the contest as the pitcher of record.
Parker ended up throwing 2.2 innings and struck out one, while Rogers went 4.1 innings and fanned 2.
