Bracken Christian broke open a close game with the Geneva School of Boerne baseball team Tuesday night to defeat the Eagles, 8-4.
It was tied 2-2 going into the fifth inning, but the Warriors tallied 5 runs in the fifth and added another in the sixth to pull away.
The Eagles scored single runs in their last two at bats but couldn’t get any closer. Geneva (8-5) is off for a bit and won’t play again until after spring break when they open district play on March 17 at home with Schertz John Paul II.
The Eagles had 8 hits in the game but committed 5 errors that led to three unearned runs.
In that decisive fifth inning, the Warriors used three singles, a sac bunt and a triple to make it 5-2. Bracken Christian added two more runs for the 7-2 lead before the Eagles could get out of the inning.
Geneva answered with a single run in the top of the sixth and it was 7-3, but the Warriors got that run back in the bottom half of the frame for the 8-3 lead. The Eagles scratched for one more run in the top of the seventh.
Geneva finished with 8 hits including a double by Gray Bruner, who also singled and scored once. Bryce Hanover and Levi McPherson both knocked out 2 hits and Eli Arnold walked twice and scored.
Hanover went 4.1 innings on the hill and scattered 9 hits and struck out 3, while McPherson gave up a hit in 1.2 innings of work.
