Boerne Champion went 4-0 at the Leander Baseball Tournament that took place last Thursday and Friday.
The Chargers beat Salado, McCallum, Round Rock and Leander to bump their record to 15-2-1 overall. Champion enters the week ranked No. 10 in the state, according to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.
The Chargers picked up a non-district game with Reagan Wednesday at home, 1 p.m., and resume district play Tuesday at Alamo Heights. They’ll host the Mules next Friday.
Champion opened with a 9-3 win over Salado and scored 3 runs in the third and added 4 more in the fifth for the bulk of their runs.
A Brody Bendele triple in the first gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead and they added another run in the fourth. Both teams finished with 8 hits in the game and 2 errors.
Bendele had the RBI triple and scored a run, Garland Whitehead also tripled and he hit a single, pushed in a run and scored once.
Austin Garritano doubled, scored twice and had an RBI, Owen Kuhl swung a hot bat and doubled and added 2 singles and collected 2 RBI. Kuhl picked up the win in 4 innings of work and scattered 5 hits, gave up 1 earned run, walked 1 and fanned 1.
Caleb Brown and Kooper DeRusse both threw and Brown scattered 2 hits in two innings, didn’t give up a run and only 1 walk, while DeRusse went an inning and yielded a hit and a run.
Champion blew out Austin McCallum 17-0 and scored 15 of those runs in one inning.
It was 2-0 in favor of the Chargers going into the fifth, and it was a while before the Knights could get out of the inning.
Champion batted 21 players in the inning to get its 15 runs and put the game out of reach.
The Chargers finished with 14 hits and Blake Ott tripled and singled, drove in 2 runs and scored a run, Cal Isley doubled and singled, collected 2 RBI and scored twice, Austin Garritano hit 2 singles, pushed in 2 runs and scored twice and Brody Bendele knocked out 2 hits, scored 2 runs and picked up an RBI.
Parker Davis struck out 7 batters in 4 innings of work to get the win after yielding 2 hits, 2 walks and no runs. Jaxson Denman tossed an inning and struck out a batter and didn’t give up a hit.
Champion picked up another shutout win, this time on Friday against Round Rock, 10-0. It was 4-0 and then the Chargers pulled away with 6 runs in the fourth. They scored 9 of their 10 runs in two at bats.
The Chargers finished with 5 hits and were led by Owen Kuhl, who doubled and singled, scored 2 runs and drove in 2 runs, Brody Bendele doubled, walked and collected 2 RBI, Austin Garritano singled, scored, walked and had an RBI, Garland Whitehead singled and scored, Jaedyn Yamaguchi picked up 2 RBI and Cal Isley drove in a run and scored once.
Blake Ott went the distance and earned the win in 5 innings of work. Ott tossed a one hitter and only walked one.
Champion closed out the tourney with a 7-5 win over Leander on Friday.
The Chargers were steady at the plate and scored a run in the second, another in the fourth, 3 in the fifth and 2 in the sixth before the Lions made a game of it with 5 runs in the seventh.
Champion had 9 hits in the game, including a triple from Brody Eisert, who also walked and drove in a run, Brody Bendele doubled and singled, picked up an RBI and scored 2 runs, while Owen Kuhl singled, pushed in 2 runs and scored once.
Garland Whitehead and Jaeden Yamaguchi singled and collected 1 RBI each.
Eisert went all 7 innings and won the game on 88 pitches. He scattered 4 hits, gave up no earned runs, walked 3 and sat down 6.
