BHS baseball team sweeps Veterans Memorial

Boerne High resumed district baseball this week and swept Veterans Memorial to pick up two 26-5A victories.

The Hounds won both in five innings. On Tuesday they recorded a 10-0 victory, and completed the sweep on Thursday, 11-1. Thursday’s game was moved to Harlandale ISD because Greyhound Field wasn’t dry enough.

Boerne 10, Wagner 0 Jackson Grimes had another strong outing on the mound Tuesday and struck out 10 batters in four innings of work. Grimes started their first four district games because of their schedule of playing district games on Tuesday and tournament games on the weekends. In those four 26-5A games, Grimes has fanned 43 batters.

Grimes only gave up one hit on Tuesday and walked two batters against his 10 strikeouts. Vinnie Tarantino closed it out in the fifth and scattered 2 hits and sat down a batter.

BHS scored in 4 of 5 innings on Tuesday and tallied 3 in the first, 1 in the second, 4 in the fourth and 2 more in the fifth.

Eli Srp was the only BHS batter to finish with 2 hits – both doubles – after the Hounds recorded 9 hits from eight different players.

Srp also scored twice, while Asher Wren and Otis Skubal doubled as well. Skubal walked twice, scored 2 runs and drove in a run and Wren picked up an RBI.

Jake Perez singled, took 2 walks, pushed in a run and scored 4 runs, Colton Shaver also walked twice, singled and scored, Grimes helped his cause with a single, RBI and a run scored, while Ronnie Scarbrough and Drake Kinneson singled and drove in one run.

Alamo Heights tourney BHS dropped its first game at the Alamo Heights baseball tournament last week but rebounded and won its last three to finish the event with a 3-1 record.

BHS opened the tourney with a 5-2 setback to Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial. Boerne scored 2 runs in its first at bat, but the Eagles matched it with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame and it was 3-2 at the end of one.

Boerne didn’t score the rest of the way, while Veterans Memorial pushed in single runs in the fourth and fifth frames to win it.

The Hounds finished with 5 hits, including 2 singles from Drake Kinneson and singles from Colton Shaver, Jackson Grimes and Ronnie Scarbrough. Jake Perez and Shaver both plated runs.

Braden Ramirez and Vinnie Tarantino both pitched, and Ramirez went 3.1 innings, scattered 3 hits, didn’t give up an earned run, walked 4 and sat down 4.

Tarantino tossed 1.2 innings and yielded a hit, an unearned run, 1 walk and fanned 2.

Up next, Boerne rallied past Eagle Pass with 4 runs in its last at bat in the fifth for the 6-4 win.

The Greyhounds outhit the Eagles, 10-3, but were trailing 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth.

BHS loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. A single from Asher Wren brought in the runner from third with no outs. After the next batter struck out, Josh Kory smacked a bases-clearing double.

Kory doubled and drove in 3 runs, Otis Skubal hit 2 singles picked up an RBI and scored a run, Ronnie Scarbrough hit 2 singles and scored, while Wren knocked out 2 singles and drove in a run.

Wren, Kepa Kanae and Caden Guerrero all tossed in the game and Guerrero picked up the win after only facing one batter since he was the pitcher of record when the Greyhounds rallied.

Wren struck out 2 and Kanae fanned 3.

Up next, a 4-run fourth inning carried the Hounds past Caney Creek on Friday, 8-2.

After the first batter popped up to centerfield in the fourth, Boerne put its next eight batters on with 4 walks, 3 singles and an error to score its 4 runs and break a 2-2 tie after CC scored 2 in the first and the Hounds added 2 in the second.

BHS pushed in single runs in the fifth and sixth to pull away and finished the game with 12 hits.

Josh Kory tripled and singled, scored twice and drove in a run, Austin Gerbes doubled and scored, Cooper Cooksey doubled and walked, Colton Shaver doubled, EJ Goolsby doubled and scored twice, while Jake Perez knocked out 2 singles and scored. Six of Boerne’s base hits went for extra bases.

Eli Srp and Ronnie Scarbrough both pitched in the game and Srp went an inning and didn’t give up a hit, while Scarbrough picked up the win in five innings of work and struck out 6 and gave up 2 hits.

Boerne closed out the tourney with a 9-2 win over Steele on Saturday.

A 6-run third inning tilted the game in Boerne’s favor after the Greyhounds were up 2-1 when the frame started and were leading 8-1 when it was over.

Boerne added another run in the sixth for the 9-1 lead before the Knights scratched for a run in the bottom of the sixth.

BHS outhit Steele, 12-6, and had five doubles, including three in that decisive third inning after Jake Perez, Josh Kory and Drake Kinneson all doubled in the frame.

Perez swung a hot bat and finished with 2 doubles, 2 singles, drove in 2 runs and scored twice. Kory walked and picked up an RBI along with his double, and Kinneson hit 2 doubles and a single, pushed in 2 runs and scored once.

Caden Guerrero went 5 innings on the hill to pick up the win after he gave up 5 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and struck out 4. Kepa Kanae and Vinnie Tarantino combined to throw in the sixth to close it out.
