CELEBRATING THE ARTS
Jodi Herring Dougherty is an oil painter living in Boerne. Originally from the state of Washington, she studied at the Seattle Art Institute in the early 1990s.
Much of her work centers around horses, inspired by a lifelong passion for these powerful and expressive animals. Through oil painting, Dougherty seeks to capture the spirit, movement and personality of the horses she loves.
She is continually learning and refining her craft as an artist. Outside the studio, Dougherty spends much of her time with her dogs, cats and horses, which remain her greatest inspiration.
A member of Boerne Art League and past participant in the Hill Country Art Waddle, some of you may have met and spoken with her and know that she is truly a horse whisperer on canvas.
When viewing Dougherty's newest painting, my first thoughts referred to the art movement known as Der Blaue Reiter.
Led by the artists Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc and Gabriele Munter, Der Blaue Reiter began in Munich and confronted feelings of alienation in a modernizing world. Included in the group were a number of Russian immigrants and native Germans.
The ambition of the artists was to go beyond the “every day” by exploring the intrinsic worth of art. They drew parallels between painting and music — a union of the senses in perceiving color, sound and other stimuli.
Theirs was a pivotal German Expressionist art movement active from 19111914, emerging in the midst of pre-war tension, and as a reaction against industrialization and traditional academic art. It was disbanded due to World War I and led to the deaths of two key members, Franz Marc and August Macke.
Hill Country Council for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) organization. HCCArts' Mission Statement is to develop and maintain an environment that supports and promotes awareness, appreciation, education, and access to all the arts in Kendall County and Texas Hill Country.
