BUDA – In the end, it came down to penalty kicks and defending state champion Liberty Hill made one more than Boerne Champion to win Thursday’s playoff match on PKs, 5-4.

Thursday’s first-round contest was tied 0-0 at the end of regulation and it was still scoreless after two 10-minute overtime periods to send it to penalty kicks at Bob Shelton Stadium in Buda.

After five kicks, both teams had converted four PKs to send it to a “golden goal” situation, basically the next kick won.

The Chargers went first and missed, and the Panthers followed and converted their sixth kick to win it and end Champion’s season.

There was some discussion amongst the officials about the rules and whether another set of five needed to kick or if it ended after the first made/miss sequence. They ruled it ended there on the sixth kick with the Panthers up 5-4.

Champion finishes its season at 16-9 overall.
