Rangers split season series with BHS baseball team

Just a few days after beating Smithson Valley at home (4-1), the Boerne High baseball team visited the Rangers on Friday to close out their series and the Greyhounds had a hard time getting their offense going.

BHS finished with 4 hits but only scored 1 run and fell to the Rangers, 9-1, to split the series with Smithson Valley.

Boerne High slipped to 5-2 in district (13-7 overall) and faced Boerne Champion this week. The Chargers hosted Tuesday’s contest and the Greyhounds will host on Friday.

In last Friday’s contest, SV scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first for the early lead and never trailed from there. The Rangers added another run in the fourth and 3 more in the fifth, and it was 7-0 before the Greyhounds could get on the board.

Otis Skubal started off the top of the sixth with a double and scored on a Colton Shaver double to make it 7-1. There was only one out and a runner on base to prompt a pitching change, but the new Rangers’ pitcher helped turn a double play to end the threat.

Smithson Valley added 2 more runs in the bottom half of the frame for the 9-1 lead and that’s where it stayed.

Skubal and Shaver doubled, with Skubal scoring their only run. Jake Perez and Josh Kory both singled and Ronnie Scarbrough walked twice.

The Hounds only struck out three times, so they put the ball in play, but the Rangers’ defense came up with a bunch of stops.

BHS used four different arms after Eli Srp went 4 innings and gave up 3 hits, 3 walks and fanned 3 batters. Asher Wren threw an inning, while Braden Ramirez and Vinnie Tarantino all tossed in the contest as well.
