After dropping the first game of their series against Alamo Heights last Tuesday, Boerne High needed a win in their second meeting to avoid the sweep, and they got it Thursday in San Antonio.
Thursday’s contest with the Mules was tied 5-5 going into the last inning of regulation and the Greyhounds pushed in the only run of the seventh to help them notch the 6-5 victory.
Boerne improved to 7-4 in district (15-9 overall). The Hounds are off from district play this week and picked up a non-district contest at San Marcos on Wednesday. They resume district action on Tuesday, April 14 at Pieper and will host the Warriors on April 17.
The Greyhounds were trailing 2-0 when the game went to the fourth inning last Thursday and responded with a 4-run frame after they sent 10 batters to the plate.
BHS only had two hits in the inning, singles from Otis Skubal and Josh Kory, but used two hit batters, a sac bunt, three walks, including one with the bases loaded, to score its four runs for the 4-2 advantage.
The Hounds added to their lead with another run in the top of the fifth and were up 5-2, but the Mules answered with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up at 5-5. Three walks, a double and an error helped Alamo Heights knock in their three runs.
It stayed there until the seventh when the Greyhounds made their move. Jake Perez and Jackson Grimes singled to put runners at first and third with one out. Ronnie Scarbrough came up and hit a fly ball to center field that allowed Perez to tag from third and score to put Boerne up 6-5.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Braden Ramirez was on the mound for the Hounds and retired the first two batters he faced with a strikeout and a fly out to Perez in centerfield.
The next Mules batter walked to put the tying run on and bring the winning run to the plate, but Ramirez induced the next batter to ground out to Kory at third after the throw to Asher Wren at first base.
Ramirez picked up the win in three innings of work and struck out 4, walked 3, gave up one hit and didn’t give up an earned run.
Eli Srp started on the hill and threw four innings. He yielded 3 hits, 3 earned runs, 6 walks and fanned 2.
Perez and Skubal finished with 2 hits apiece, Perez scored twice, including the game-winning run, Scarbrough had 2 RBI, including the game winner, while Kory also finished with 2 RBI.
