Boerne ISD tennis players advance to regional tourney

SAN ANTONIO – Boerne ISD had tennis players from Boerne High and one from Boerne Champion qualify for this weekend’s Region IV-5A tournament in Corpus Christi.

The top two at last week’s District 26-5A tourney advanced to Corpus where state berths are up for grabs. The 5A state tourney is May 7-8 in San Antonio.

Aidan Cebe won the boys singles event to advance to Corpus Christi, while Nick Dube and Gavin Cebe claimed first in boys doubles and Paytin Johndrow and Justin Barraza topped the field in mixed doubles.

Aidan Cebe defeated Champion’s Ethan Wolf to wrap up the title, while Wolf ended up in third in boys singles and can serve as an alternate.

Gavin Cebe and Nick Dube beat Santiago Castelazo and Brandon Tragord of Alamo Heights in the finals, 6-3, 6-2, to wrap up the title.

Another BHS boys doubles team, Rylan Bratz and Caleb Norman fell to Castelazo and Tragord in the semis, 6-2, 6-3, and ended up third to serve as alternates.

In mixed doubles, Barraza and Johndrow beat Michelle Cardenas and Cooper Fordham of Alamo Heights for the district title, 6-4, 6-4.

Champion’s Alexandra Morris finished second at district to advance to regionals and is the team’s lone representative. Morris fell in the finals to Allison Crane of Alamo Heights, 6-0, 6-0.

Also for the Chargers, Ainsley Day and Zara Khan lost in the girls doubles semifinals match to Ellie Rose and Hallie Ziegler of AH, 6-1, 6-4.

Day and Khan also fell to another Lady Mules team of Graciela Salaburu and Madison Shaffer in the playback match, 6-1, 7-5, to finish third and will serve as alternates.

After falling to Aidan Cebe, Wolf lost to Wagner’s Frediani Matteo in the playback match, 6-0, 6-0, to finish third.
