Comfort High long jumper Carter Pape made a lot of school history this year and capped off his record-setting season with a silver medal at the 3A state track and field meet for one last school record.

Pape earned a silver medal at the 3A state meet on Thursday in Austin and is the first Comfort athlete to medal at state track since Javon Bryant earned silver in the high jump and bronze in the triple jump back in 2004.

Pape, who had broken the school’s long jump record three times prior to state, did it again on Thursday with a leap of 23-11.25 for silver.

Pape broke Quin Sweeney’s school record in the long jump (22-3) set during that 2016 season with a leap of 23-3.5 at the Bobcat/ Deer Relays in Comfort.

Then Pape broke his own school record at the Area Meet in Llano, jumping 23-5, and then set the record again by jumping 23-8 at the Class 3A-Region I meet in Abilene.

And finally, Pape broke the record a fourth time on Thursday at the state track meet in Austin, by jumping 23-11.25 on his final jump.

Comfort track coach Jordan Chandler said Pape deserves it.

“Nobody works harder than Carter,” Chandler said. “He put in the work, day in and day out, and he kept getting better week after week.”

Pape was joined at state by Comfort high jumper Molly Gowan, who tied for sixth by clearing 5-2.

Pape and Gowan were the first Comfort state qualifiers in track and field since 2016.
