Greyhound Presley Merkens earns silver in 800
AUSTIN — Athletes from Boerne ISD wrapped up the 2026 track and field season last Friday in Austin and the lone Boerne High runner at the meet earned a silver medal in just her freshman year.
Greyhound Presley Merkens finished second in the girls 5A 800 race with a time of 2.11.99 to break the school record she set in her previous race at regionals.
Merkens came out of the gate strong and was leading after the first lap in the twolap race. The field caught up and Merkens said she was just trying to hold her spot, something she did and was only beaten by another freshman, Adelaide Wortman of Highland Park, who ran a 2:11.25 for gold.
Aaliyah Williams of White Settlement Brewer earned bronze with a 2:12.83, ahead of New Braunfels’ Savanah Moya, who was fourth in 2:12.96.
Boerne Champion
Boerne Champion had four entries at state and while none of them medaled, one of the athletes, Juliana Syroney, recorded a top-6 finish, which means she earned a team point.
Syroney raced in the 100 and 200 and finished sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.17 to earn a team point. Syroney also ran in the 100 and placed ninth with an 11.95.
On the boys side, Champion’s 4x200 relay of Hayden Fridley, Jaxon Harbuck, Ryan McDonald and Brogan Dempsey teamed up for a time of 1:27.29 for eighth, one spot ahead of district foe Wagner (1:27.33).
Also for the Chargers, Shawn Edwards raced in the 3200 and finished ninth with a time of 10:05.81.
