CELEBRATING THE ARTS

You are invited to join the Kendall community today, Saturday, May 30, at 2 p.m. for a demonstration by artist Darlene Marwitz of the process she used to create many of the works included in the current exhibit, “Songs of the Ocotillo” at MixHaus Gallery, 716 High St. in Comfort.

“My interest in textiles also led me to explore how paper has historically been used to create fabric-like materials for clothing using a Japanese technique called momigami,” Marwitz said. “The idea of elevating simple papers into something strong enough to manipulate and stitch has opened a new avenue for creating texture in my work.”

Using traditional konnyaku (konjac) starch, Marwitz said she starts by making a gel-like paste to thinly brush onto a single layer of paper, most any natural-fiber paper.

“Once the paper has dried, I crumple and knead it. The kneading breaks down the fibers, making the paper more flexible and stronger, a fibrous and workable material for mixed media,” she said.

Marwitz’s work is part of the MixHaus current exhibit, “Songs of the Ocotillo,” which brings together the work of poet Lucy Griffith and Marwitz in a compelling exploration of the beloved ocotillo -- an enduring symbol of resilience, transformation, and place.

Through poetry and mixed media, the exhibition pays special tribute to the plant and the Chihuahuan Desert region.

A collaborative chapbook featuring both artists’ work is available in conjunction with the show, with limited copies available. There is also a broadside poster available in limited quantities.

Visitors can deepen their experience by listening to recordings of Griffith reading selected poems via QR code in the gallery, so be sure to bring your smart phones and headphones.

The exhibition closes May 31, so this is one final chance to view the work and get a close look at how it was made.
