Summer reading challenge not just for kids

Summer reading challenge not just for kids
The Vanishing Cherry Blossom Bookshop, by Takuya Asakura.

THE BOOKWORM

If your perception of a Summer Reading Challenge is that it’s “just for kids,” we have great news. Teens and adults are encouraged to participate as well, and the reading challenge runs through July 24, so there’s plenty of time to sign up.

The challenge follows the theme of “Unearthing a Story,” and there are many topics to choose from. One of the challenges is to read a book set in another country. If you like this idea, here’s one of my recent reads and it’s set in Japan.

“The Vanishing Cherry Blossom Bookshop” revolves around the concept of a person locating the perfect book at the right time, to help them resolve current issues.

A young artist rediscovers the classic The Little Prince, to help her with grief over her mother’s death, and an older man discovers a title that aids him in accepting his ongoing memory loss.

All the characters in this novel are guided by a mysterious young woman, with a calico cat, to a magical bookshop set amongst cherry blossoms.

This book is available as an e-book through the Cloud library app, and in print format.

Another challenge is to read a mystery or true-crime book. We have lots of cozy mysteries by H.Y. Hanna on our shelves, but her most recent release is more suspenseful.

“The Taverna at the Edge of Night” is set on the island of Crete. If you are a fan of the Mary Stewart or Victoria Holt books, you might enjoy this novel.

A jewelry designer decides to visit her best friend who runs a tavern on the island and is instantly embroiled in a world of intrigue; kidnappings, murders and not knowing who to trust. This book will be cataloged in print soon.

“Murder in Boerne, Texas” is a recently published book by local authors Richard Tomlilnson and Kathryn L. Adam-Hurst. It’s well researched and is a fascinating read.

The book tells the story of the Bickel family massacre in Boerne in 1868. This title would fit in well, with the challenge of reading a book about our area. There is a print copy of Murder in Boerne, Texas available for checkout in our library.

Summer reading challenge materials for adults and teens can be collected at the circulation desk upstairs.
