Russell Case, Laurel Daniel, Linda Glover Gooch, David Griffin, David Grossmann, Michael Magrin, Denise LaRue Mahlke, Tim Newton, Phil Starke and John Taft. While there, view the lovely seven-foot sculpture titled “Staking Claim” by artist Gerald Balciar. It’s sculpted from 1,400 pounds of Colorado Yule Marble.
The precious marble is metamorphosed Leadville limestone found only in the Yule Creek Valley in the West Elk Mountains of Colorado. Local philanthropist Kathleen Brinkman and the L.D. Brinkman Corporation gifted the piece in honor of her late husband, L.D. “Brink” Brinkman, one of the museum’s founders.
The Museum of Western Art is a work of art in its own right with its unique architectural design by renowned architect O’Neil Ford. Opening in the spring of 1983, the museum celebrated the cowboy artists of America.
Today, the museum preserves and promotes the heritage of the American West and serves as a bridge between the past and present, ensuring that the legacy of the American West will be preserved for the future. MOWA is located at 1550 Bandera Highway in Kerrville.
Thirty-nine miles to the southeast, The Sons of Charlie Russell: Cowboy Artists of America premiers at the Briscoe Western Art Museum through September 5. It features the founding fathers of Western art alongside the cowboy artists of America. Members of the CAA have safeguarded the traditional style of the genre. The Sons of Charlie Russell defines a core set of criteria defining traditional Western art.
In addition to artworks from the Briscoe’s permanent collection, The Sons of Charlie Russell borrowed from 17 lenders, including the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, the Booth Western Art Museum, the Eddie Basha Collection, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Sid Richardson Museum, and several private collectors.
The Briscoe is located at 210 W. Market St. in San Antonio. Call 210-299-4499 for information or email [email protected].
