LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Time to repeal Citizens United

Editor, The almighty dollar. That’s what elections in our country have come down to, since the Supreme Court ruling of 2010, stating that corporations are people, and big money donors can buy candidates.

That’s the ruling called “Citizens United.” We have seen it unfold right before our eyes. Elon Musk literally offered voters a million dollars right out in the open to vote for an Ohio Republican candidate in 2024.

No doubt, the billionaire donor was a source of major money behind the election of Donald Trump to the presidency.

Billionaires routinely chip in to get their candidate elected, with questionable intentions, likely to curry favor and to benefit themselves and their businesses.

Big corporations fall all over themselves to ingratiate themselves with their “donations” to people running for office.

All of that kind of money pouring in to elect our officials only invites corruption. It’s under the guise of Citizens United and the dark-money PACS that sprang up directly after the law was passed which made it possible. Even foreign money can now sift through candidates’ hands.

The Supreme Court failed us in this decision. Congress has betrayed us in allowing this ugly money machine to continue. No other country in the world sees the kind of elections like we have, that pour so much cash into electing candidates.

It’s ludicrous, it’s unfair and its un-American.

“We The People” elect these folks. It’s time Congress moves to repeal Citizens United forever, and make elections free, fair and great again, because this is why we see so much corruption in our government these days — the almighty dollar.
